What do volunteers do?

Here's What You Need to Know

Hospice is a comprehensive support system that offers medical, emotional, and spiritual care to terminally ill patients and their families. The hospice team consists of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers who work together to provide the best possible care for patients. Hospice volunteers play an important role in providing support and friendship to patients and their families during this difficult time. Volunteers often participate in fundraising activities to help raise money for hospice services. By offering their time and talents, hospice volunteers make a tremendous difference in the lives of those they serve. Support is provided to the patient’s loved ones, as well.

Trained volunteers are valued members of the hospice team. Hospice volunteers provide companionship and support to terminally ill patients and their families. They may also offer practical help, such as running errands or providing transportation to appointments. In addition, hospice volunteers may be responsible for providing respite care, doing light housekeeping, or preparing meals. While the specific duties of a hospice volunteer will vary depending on the needs of the patient and family, all volunteers are expected to show compassion and respect for those they are serving. As a result, hospice volunteers play a vital role in making the end-of-life experience more bearable for everyone involved.

what do volunteers do

Skilled volunteers to
provide a high-quality support

Perennial Hospice is committed to providing the highest quality of care to our patients and their families. To that end, we offer a comprehensive training program for our volunteers. The program is designed to provide volunteers with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively support our patients and families.

The training covers a wide range of topics, including communication, coping with loss, and providing emotional support. In addition, volunteers are allowed to shadow experienced hospice staff members in order to learn more about the day-to-day operations of hospice care. By the end of the program, volunteers will have all the tools they need to provide compassionate and high-quality support to our patients and families.

Volunteers service
is your comfortable choice!

Though the duties of hospice volunteers can vary depending on the needs of the individual patient, there are some common tasks that most volunteers perform. These can include providing companionship to patients, running errands for families, light housekeeping, and respite care. Some other duties are:

  • Encouraging the patient to tell their life story
  • Transporting a patient to physician visits or shopping
  • Assisting with personal care such as bathing or transferring from a chair to bed, if the volunteer has been properly trained to do so

In addition, hospice volunteers often play an important role in providing emotional support to both patients and their loved ones. By offering their time and compassion, hospice volunteers make a tremendous difference in the lives of those they serve.

Volunteers fill the gap between loved ones and professional caregivers. Volunteers will be there even when friends and family find it hard to do so. Volunteers don’t have the same attachment family does and they are trained to meet the needs of patients and families.

Why do people become volunteers? For many reasons. For some, volunteering is a form of gratitude for the help they received when a loved one was ill, and others volunteer as a way of making a difference in their community. Hospice volunteers are an essential part of the hospice care team as their support and care can make a difference in dying patients’ and their families’ lives.

receive the gift

Receive the gift of time from someone who cares

Our volunteers can offer a listening ear, help with practical tasks, or just be there for company.

Perennial Hospice is proud of the work our volunteers do to create a beautiful and peaceful environment for patients and families. Our volunteers are one of the key factors that make Los Angeles hospice care so special, and different from being in a hospital. They are involved in many different areas throughout Perennial Hospice, including bereavement support, qualified therapists, inpatient unit, fundraising events, kitchen, and more.

Each volunteer’s role is customized according to their availability, interests, and skills. Our volunteer therapists offer services such as reiki massage and beauty treatments, and we even have a chiropodist and a hairdresser who give their time to help patients look and feel good. This is just a small part of what makes Perennial Hospice special. Our volunteers are an important part of our team, and we are grateful for all they do to support our mission.
